1. Vegeta.
Vegeta wants to get stronger. Period. He has pride, and he has the power to back it up. In Dragon Ball Super, he actually briefly surpasses the plot-armored Goku. The fact that he is constantly neck and neck with the main character is a testament to his significance in Dragon Ball Z. Goku respects Vegeta hugely for his genius fighting instincts and quick thinking. We slowly watch him develop from evil to good as the series progresses. Ruthlessness is not elemental to Vegeta’s personality, but his zest for battle is. Vegeta passes Goku on this list in part because Vegeta is so outwardly passionate. He wears his heart on his sleeve.
2. Goku.
Goku is the main protagonist. Like Vegeta, Goku loves to fight. Unlike Vegeta, Goku is refreshingly pure of heart. After reading Dragon Ball Z, one can't help but aspire to be more like Goku! Toriyama started a trend of carefree airheads like Goku being main protagonists – see Uzumaki Naruto and Monkey D. Luffy. Goku is also hardworking. In the Frieza saga, he trains to the point of near death. He makes friends with all whom he crosses, even sparing those who seem evil at first. Goku’s capacity for empathy is admirable.
3.Hercule.
When the Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan fight to save Earth, the cocky Hercule fights to keep his reputation. Time and time again, Hercule’s humorous struggle to maintain face in the presence of the superhuman protagonists has readers and viewers laughing aloud. Although he is weak and tends to take credit for the Z fighters’ accomplishments, Hercule is incredibly funny.
4. Piccolo.
Piccolo is the first mentor of Goku’s son, Gohan. Despite being evil in the original Dragon Ball series, he heroically sacrifices his life to save Gohan against the evil Saiyans. Save the Buu saga, Piccolo is one of the strongest characters in Dragon Ball Z. He is also characterized by his great intelligence. It has been stated that Piccolo is Akira Toriyama’s favorite character.
5. Gohan.
Like his father, Goku, Gohan is pure of heart. Goku fans such as myself can’t help but love Gohan too. Although he lacks Saiyan fighting spirit, he is incredibly strong. In fact, he is arguably the strongest character at the end of the Dragon Ball Z series. Rather than fighting for pleasure, he fights to protect his loved ones.
